A DC drive is a speed regulation system for the DC motor, and is what allows the DC motor to run. The 2 DC Drive Types

There are two types of DC drives. They consist of non-regenerative and regenerative DC drives.

Non-regenerative DC drives: these are known as single quadrant drives, and can only rotate in one direction. It is a commonly used DC drive, and is specifically applied in circumstances where high friction loads are present, and the load itself applies a powerful natural brake. This is because a non-regenerative drive can only be stopped by shutting off the voltage to the motor, triggering a coast stop shut down.  

Regenerative DC drives: these are known as four-quadrant drives, and can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. This electrical energy is returned to the power supply. Regenerative DC drives allow for the speed and direction, of the motor torque and motor rotation, to be controlled. They also have the ability to control braking, and can switch between motoring and breaking, easily and quickly.
