A DC drive is a speed regulation system for the DC motor, and is what allows the DC motor to run. The DC Drive integrates between the controller and the DC motor, converting alternating current (AC), into direct current (DC). A DC drive has two main components that consist of a converter and a regulator. It works to start, stop, change the direction, and change the speed of the DC motor.
The DC drive is a popular option, boasting technology that is efficient, reliable, easy to operate and install, and is cost-effective. It is possible to retrofit a DC drive with an existing DC motor, allowing the user to add the drive when need be. Some other advantageous qualities include its regenerative, and high-power applications.
DC drives are often used in elevators, textile mills, spindle drives, machine tools, winders, excavators, crushers, and more.
The 2 DC Drive Types
There are two types of DC drives. They consist of non-regenerative and regenerative DC drives.
Non-regenerative DC drives: these are known as single quadrant drives, and can only rotate in one direction. It is a commonly used DC drive, and is specifically applied in circumstances where high friction loads are present, and the load itself applies a powerful natural brake. This is because a non-regenerative drive can only be stopped by shutting off the voltage to the motor, triggering a coast stop shut down.
Regenerative DC drives: these are known as four-quadrant drives, and can convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. This electrical energy is returned to the power supply. Regenerative DC drives allow for the speed and direction, of the motor torque and motor rotation, to be controlled. They also have the ability to control braking, and can switch between motoring and breaking, easily and quickly.
Sprint Electric DC Drives
Sprint Electric produces both enclosed and open chassis-mount DC drives. The company has been designing and manufacturing industrial motor drives for over 30 years, delivering high-quality products that do their job well. Sprint Electrical is allowing users to take control, and make use of DC drives that are best suited to their specific requirements.
